MBUNA 90 gallon fish tank African Cichlids From Lake Malawi

This is my 90 gallon fish tank, I wanted all mbuna, but got shipped a haplichrome by accident. I like the Cyrtocara moorii, so I kept him (or her– I can’t tell what he or she is yet!) I like dance music, so I set the tune to Switch.

  1. Hummm. I’m not sure from the video what kind of rock that is.
To buffer the water you will need a lot more, if it is a buffering type rock. A good test (but not 100% foolproof) is to take the rock out, let it dry, and drip a few drips of vinegar on it. If it fizzes, it is a good buffering rock. (but make sure you rinse the vinegar off WELL before placing back.

  2. Peacocks are very tempermental. IF they are stressed even a little bit, they will not show off their colors. If you are going to put them in the two foot tank, it will be too small, and they will be plain silver/white fish (from stress)
And, peacocks can get pretty large, and they are finicky eaters. If you put them with bold aggressive fish, they may not get enough to eat. Also, if you have different peacocks, they may interbreed, and crossbred peacocks are worthless (and usually very UGLY)

  3. Yeah, they shouldn’t get that large. I was a novice African Cichlid keeper when I got these guys and I overfed them. As a result, many got way way way TOO BIG. I had to trade some in at the pet store. :(
I know now NOT to overfeed ;)

  4. The Acie’s look huge….

  5. I wouldn’t try to put a peacock in there. I don’t think one by themselves would be very happy (they like to be kept in groups, a male to three or four females)
I would think one by itself would be very lonely, would stress, and wouldn’t show its best colors.

  6. ive got what i think is limestone in the water (it was sold as white rock so i dno). ive got a vid of it on my account thingo. click on my name and the vid should be there.

  7. pH up will not work to keep your water stable.
You will need to buffer the water with crushed coral, limestone, and/or a good buffering solution. Buffers protect your water from having flutuations in your pH.
Check out Seachem products. They make a Malawi/victoria buffer to keep your pH stable.

  8. It is recommended to keep three of them. Hopefully you will luck out and a pair will form.

  9. would i be able to have like one peacock cichlid in there. i like peacock cichlids. sorry about all the questions

  10. its the video, 55 gallon fishtank

  11. Actually I think Victoria Basin Cichlids are the most colorful.
The only reason Malawi Cichlids get more attention is because they are more readily available to the public.
My next tank will probably be Victoria Basin Cichlids. But, they do require a larger tank, even larger than my four foot long tank. (GRUMPY).
And, they lose color if they are stressed.

No sense in getting colorful fish if they will be stressed and have no color anyway.

  12. and could i get any julies aswell. Damn malawi’s got all the colourful fish

  13. the ph is only about 7.6 but i put some ph up in it and how many shell dwellers could i get?

  14. Tanganyika Shell Dwellers are a good option.
Stay away from Lake Malawi fish. A two foot tank with Malawi Cichlids will be murder.
The Tanganyikan need much higher pH, you might have to check your pH, they like hard water with a pH of 8.6
They are interesting fish, and VERY fun to watch. Provide them with lots of shells, and watch them set up and make camp (home) in shells. Great fish :)

  15. hey, i have a 2 foot fishtank i am setting up for africans. what fish would fit in there without bashing any others? thanks

  16. Hey I have a cichlid tank with some unknown cichlids im pretty sure theyre from Lake Malawi can you help name them please? Check my channel for the videos.

  17. Yes, those are Pseudotropheus demasoni.
This tank has changed a lot, if you see my channel and fish videos you can see my tank updates I just did last month. And, I got rid of the Labeotropheus trewavasae, they just got too big and grumpy for a 90 gallon. I went with white top hara, and I’m enjoying them a lot more. :) The harmony in the tank is much better after getting rid of the trewavasae. I’d get them again, if I had a longer tank, maybe like a six foot long tank.

  18. Very nice, am I in the process of setting up my 90 gallon Mbuna tank. Are those little Demasoni I see? Not sure if you said this ahead of time but what species are all in there? Just curious…

  19. Thanks for the info!

  20. That isn’t really sand, although it looks like sand. It is a product made by the 3M company, called colorquartz. This is the black S grade. I got mine from Brodsky & Associates years ago. i don’t know if they still sell it, but you can try.

But be prepared, you must buy it in bulk (it is usually sold to professional contractors only) and shipping is very pricey. BUT, this company was wonderful to work with.

  21. Hey I love the black sand, I have been wanting to get black sand for my cichlid tank for a while now but I cant seem to find any at a fair price. Any idea as to where I can find some?

  22. Thank you!
Yes, I’ve added even more rock since this footage was taken. They love their rocks.

  23. I can’t help it. I’m a Will Smith Fan :)
